We are using MySQL, Help Save It!

Oracle is trying to buy Sun, and since Sun bought MySQL last year, Oracle would then own MySQL. With your support, there is a good chance that the EC (from which Oracle needs approval) could prevent this from happening or demand Oracle to change the terms for MySQL or give other guarantees to the users. Without your support, it might not. The EC is our last big hope now because the US government approved the deal while Europe is still worried about the effects.

The Perfect World

I've dreamt of a world that no one starve, dye or even get stress, every person is a king or queen serve by hundreds of followers. Then I woke and write my dream in a notebook and try to make a story. But in the middle of my story i realize that not everyone was a king or queen, because a king cant be serve by other king in ragged cloths. Then i try to write down that everyone was given by a deity a ton of gold that he will spent for the rest of his life, but then, why would one sell something for golds if he has a ton of gold. Then the gold was remove and everyone live with their family peacefully and enjoying life. After 5 hours, i've finish 12 pages(6 leaves) story. I show it to my sister, which i usually do because she's fond of story, and she reacted disappointed and told me that, that story was one of my worst, and "how can everyone live in harmony and peace and wealth when no one will help them, or serve them, or sell merchandise, if every one is busy living peacefully.

Then i go to my room, seat where i usually seat to see the sky and simulate a world where i live in a castle where everyone is a counts and countesses, lords and ladies, princes and princesses and all of them were my ambassadors, and what i say they obey. After 10 minute of fantasizing the dream i got assassinated by my son because he wants to rule too.Another dream came about and i was a defiant son were i think that my parents will protect my forever, then i became a criminal.

Our world aint perfect, will not be perfect, and can't be perfected for people's lives. Peace coexist with war, life coexist with death. There is no peace if we does not know about war.

2010 Candidates that Supports Information Technology and Internet Access

The Philippine Internet Users' Society (PIUS) is an organization for everyone and has strong advocacy towards the empowerment of everyone through computer and internet access.  Yet, PIUS is non-partisan in order to create a venue for exchange and wider support for its advocacy.

As an individual however, I would like to give my sharing on two people who will be figures in the 2010 elections and who in their careers have shown a non-political, non-gimmick and non-TRAPO sincerity in supporting information technology and internet access.

These persons are Nicanor "Nick" Perlas and Party list Representative Teddy Casino.

Internet: mula apari hanggang hulo

What is Internet? Wiki says that it is a global system of interconnected computer networks. My colleagues say that it is Information super high way. The brotherhood of DotAboys says "para maka-godlike ng mga weak sa GG". I say its for my gaming interests, but a very deep part of me says that internet is the LIMITLESS world that is far bigger than the whole outerspace.

Internet is not free, nor can be found laying down the street. That is why only 13% of the Filipino population has access the internet. A very low percentage for the golden age of technology. It is also the lowest in southeast Asia.

These 13% is connected to the world through dial-up cards, globe broadband, or pldtDSL. Most of the users are connected by the service of pldtDSL. This is a great service, but cost at least P1000 a month plus a computer is required. Due to this money problem, "computer shops" started to sprout nationwide. These shops offers internet and computer access at the lowest cost of P10 per hour. A great opportunity for the costumers and the entrepreneur itself. But still 87% are unable to connect to the world. Why can't we offer internet for free? It is because currency is the currency of the realm. Free internet access for the whole world might look impossible, but its not. Its just not probable.

OneWebDay 2009 and One Internet Day 2009

This year for the first time, the Philippines through the Philippine Internet Users Society (PIUS) together with Events Philippines and various partner organizations which includes media organizations, non-government organizations, entrepreneurs, businesses, educational institutions and others have joined hand to officially marked OneWebDay - "The Internet Day" on September 22, 2009 at Mall of Asia.

On September 22, 2006 the first ever OneWebDay was celebrated. The idea was created by Susan P. Crawford, who set up the web site, traveled to different cities to encourage people to celebrate OneWebDay, and persuaded the initial group of evangelists to celebrate the day. David Weinberger, Mary Hodder, and David Isenberg (all OneWebDay Board members) were heavily involved in brainstorming about OneWebDay in 2005-06.

We in the Philippines are perhaps far ahead from those in the United States, that is why way before the OneWebDay, Janette Toral and others have actually started celebrating an equivalent event to One Internet Day here in the Philippines in 2000.  Although not a regular annual event it was an attempt to really make the internet more accessible to everyone.

Let's Bring Back the “Bayanihan Spirit”

Posted by Philippine Internet Users Society in Opinion , Message from the PIUS CEO

Philippine Internet Users Society

More than the advocacy being pushed by the Philippine Internet Users Society (PIUS) , which is “Empowering Everyone Thru Computer and Internet Access,” is another advocacy of reviving an old traditional cultural trait of the Filipino, which is now fast vanishing because of the onslaught of free market competition.

Law of the jungle. In the liberal free market competition, there is a tendency for individuals to be reduced to the level of the beast in the dog-eat-dog, survival of the fittest, law of the economic jungle system, where everyone competes against each other for jobs, resources and opportunities.

The harsh competition in this so-called law of the jungle has triggered the rise of a perverted culture of ultra individualism and existentialism that is slowly eroding basic institutions and even the moral fabric that has kept family and society together. Even the humanist tradition of being concern for others, for the common good and for the general welfare, is now also slowly vanishing.
